Education support policy
last updated 2024-07-10
relates to Education

General Guidelines

  • Teaching and/or other activities are part of a PhD's work / education.
  • PhD candidates get Doctoral school credits for educational support.
  • At GRS, PhD candidates are expected to provide educational support during the first 3.5 years of their PhD.
  • Supervisors must inform PhD candidates about the expected support
  • The department strives to the most balanced distribution of education support hours
  • Hiring student assistants to fill in for temporary and/or last-minute changes is not recommended.

Hours

  • Approximately 10-15% of the working time of a PhD (170 - 250 hours) should be spent on educational support.
  • Compensation of above average hours in previous years is not possible.
  • Above average of hours can only be assigned in consultation with the supervisors and with mutual agreement of the PhD/PD and should not exceed 15% of working hours.

Planning Process

  • The starting point for the planning of educational support is last year's schedule.
  • In principle PhDs & PDs stay with the same courses throughout their doctoral education.
  • If the contract of a PhD is converted to a postdoc (PD) position, we recommend to maintain the same schedule/support.
  • Planning of educational activities should be done together with the supervisors, and should minimize delays for PhDs.
  • Preferences of PhD’s/PD’s/Lecturers will be taken into account where possible. However, educational support activities do not necessarily need to be aligned with the topic of the PhD.
  • Only new PhD’s/PD are asked for their course preferences.

Timeline

  • May: PhD’s/PD’s are added to the list & asked for their course preferences
  • June: concept list with proposed changes for the new academic year is sent to everyone for input.
  • End August: final schedule
  • After August: PhD’s and/or course instructors coordinate new changes themselves
